The election eve scene showed heavy turnout in Illinois and Texas while mostly light in South Carolina. Roosevelt and Willkie pressed final appeals as voters prepared to cast ballots. parties accused each other of smear campaigns and last minute rhetoric.
In Hornell on November 5, a Junior Young Republican Club formed by boys aged 10 to 13 declares girls taboo. The president says politics and girls do not mix.
In Sharon New Hampshire a candlelit town recount finished at 12 12 A M with 24 votes for Willkie and seven for Roosevelt. The 60 residents gathered in a 115 year old schoolhouse on Temple Mountain celebrated a quick tally after midnight.
Cabinet members with homes in New York traveled there to vote today while most Roosevelt aides cast absentee ballots. Several officials mailed ballots to Tennessee Illinois Texas Indiana and Ohio and the two Republican war and Navy secretaries traveled to their homes to vote in Huntington and Chicago.
Duanesburg reports Joseph Nowak 34 to be charged with murder in the hammer slaying of Leonard Griffin. Nowak surrendered after escaping state police by diving through a barn window on his employer's farm. Griffin found Thursday near Altamont, half buried under stores and brush.
Continued Willkie casts vote and urges all to ballot, speaking to Ritz Theater crowd and nationwide radio audience. He warns discord at home jeopardizes freedom, recalls past unity, and calls Americans to vote to preserve democracy and liberties. John L. Lewis supports Roosevelt and asserts reelection could lead to war. Willkie defends a third term debate stance.
Roosevelt ends his campaign with a nationwide radio address and a traditional prayer from the Episcopal Book of Common Prayer. He frames democracy as a living, collective will and contrasts peace at home with Europe’s war, stressing freedom in voting and unity beyond party lines. He does not name his opponent Wendell Willkie.
The Iron Guard newspaper says talks are under way and Russian leader Vyacheslav Molotov may visit Vienna to confer with German and Italian foreign ministers Ribbentrop and Ciano. Sources in Bucharest note aims include the Balkans and Near East with overlap in the Dardanelles and Iran oil fields.
One man, Walter Demming, 52, Bradford farmer and father of five, died from a broken neck after a car left a highway north of Hammondsport and overturned into a 15 foot embankment and burned. Five others, including Frank Heffernan, his wife and two children, and Bert Rhinehart, were injured, described as minor injuries.
In Uvalde Texas INS reports Vice President John Nance Garner cast his ballot without revealing his presidential choice. It was believed he backed the Democratic ticket in state races, while his national vote remained a private matter between him and God as election day arrived.
