Fireman held in motel blaze
An East Syracuse volunteer firefighter Raymond Hoffman age 19 was arrested after a blaze at the Carrier Circle Holiday Inn in DeWitt that sent 170 guests fleeing and injured more than a dozen. He faces second degree arson first degree assault and second degree criminal mischief charges. If Howard Tarrell dies of injuries a manslaughter charge may follow. Hoffman was arraigned and jailed without bail with reappearance set for Nov 16. Police praised investigators and noted possible ties to a rash of hotel fires in the Carrier Circle area.

Califano presses wage ceiling limits on Social Security
HEW Secretary Joseph A. Califano attacked a proposed amendment to remove the $3,000 annual earnings cap for full Social Security benefits. He warned it would raise taxes on working people to aid a privileged minority and noted most new benefits would go to earners over $10,000. He praised the Senate panel but said Carter oppose its $4,506 1978 and $6,000 1979 ceilings and supported raising employer payroll tax bases with no employee relief. The secretary also endorsed a plan to aid nonworkers.

State allows NM gas customers expansion across system
Niagara Mohawk Power Corp and four other natural gas suppliers won PSC approvals to add residential customers in Western and Central New York plus Albany.
