Partly cloudy to breezy and unseasonably cold tonight and Wednesday with a warmer afternoon expected. Expect scattered showers and variable skies through the period as mild air returns. Plan for cooler nights and dry spells between systems.
Regions across the Plains reported strong thunderstorms as scattered showers moved through Englar and the mid Atlantic area. A cool air mass hovered near the Northeast including New York Pennsylvania Rhode Island Connecticut New Hampshire and Massachusetts.
The forecast for Thursday predicts showers and strong thunderstorms across the Plains and South with winds up to 70 mph and hail possible. Nebraska, Kansas, northern Texas and Oklahoma face the strongest storms, while scattered showers appear from the Carolinas to Florida and the Great Lakes. A Monday tornado in southern Colorado injured 18 and damaged trailer homes. California stays dry and sunny, with temperatures ranging from 103 in Fort Stockton Texas to 31 in Yellowstone Wyoming.
The first hurricane of the season gathered force off Mexico's southern coast. Forecasters said it would stay offshore as Hurricane Adolph hovered about 180 miles southwest of Zihuatanejo and moved northwest. Winds reached near 145 mph.
