Museum quest a muddled mess over OzFest funding
The Chittenango Foundation faces a tangled financial picture after two decades with no public accounting. Land bought for 74 000 for a Baum museum has saddled resources, debts total about 61 000, and annual reports and Form 990 filings were neglected. OzFest revenue barely covers expenses as former leaders face foreclosure risk and questions about endowments, rent, and tax obligations.

Chittenango group faces tax form filing lapse
The Chittenango Foundation, sponsor of OzFest, has never filed Form 990 with the IRS despite rules requiring nonprofits earning over 325000 a year to disclose income and expenses. Officials cite unfamiliarity with the form and note penalties can reach five percent of gross receipts, while advocates stress transparency and accountability.

Oz author Frank Baum birthday events in Chittenango
The Sullivan Free Library hosts a birthday party for Chittenango native Frank Baum. The Oz Committee organizes the first parade and a library party. In 1980 the parade enters a second year and the Yellow Brick Road run starts. By 1982 a yellow brick sidewalk is funded by local merchants, and the Chittenango Foundation buys land on Route 13 to build a Baum museum nearby.

Chittenange Foundation Faces Volunteer Shortfall After OzFests
After 21 years of OzFests the Chittenange Foundation has not built a broad base of volunteers. Volunteers here wonder why this festival lacks the wider community support seen at other Oz events.
Efforts to Build Oz Museum in Chittenango Face Funding Gaps
Chittenango Foundation pursued L. Frank Baum tribute on 4 acres at town tip, but flood plain concerns and a costly move halted plans. In 1997 the United Methodist Church offered the parsonage for free if moved, aided by a $25,000 state budget line. No funds were collected, and questions linger if Oz museum fits the remaining grant. Magee and Hoffmann aides say the money could still be available if tied to the project.
