Consumers confident as May confidence hits 28-year high
The Conference Board said its consumer confidence index jumped to 127.1 in May from 118.5 in April, the strongest since August 1969, while economists warn of slowing growth. They cite strong employment and low inflation as fueling optimism but anticipate potential Fed rate hikes and cooling consumption into 1998.

Microwave Filter ends suit with founders in out of court settlement
DeWitt electronics firm Microwave Filter Co. and founders Glyn and Emily Bostick resolved a three year legal fight with no payment. The suit claimed the couple violated a noninterference pact and denigrated the company to employees. The settlement, reached as trial was to begin, bars contact that harms the other party but allows continued competition with Microwave Filter's successor.

NM seeks end to energy gross receipts tax
Niagara Mohawk chief William Davis urged New York to repeal the gross receipts tax on energy arguing it is regressive and unfair. He noted the tax is collected with utility bills and sent to the state, while the company would prefer a net income tax as a more equitable approach. Davis warned against out of state firms entering a fully deregulated market and attracting customers to avoid the tax. The tax raises about 1.25 billion for New York annually, with localities sometimes adding their own charges. The Senate proposes a freeze and phase out totaling 600 million.

Ex-newspapers building to get major upgrade
A vacant downtown Syracuse building once home to the Herald Co is slated for a 250000 facelift and return to the tax rolls. The city will sell Herald Place and North Franklin Street property for 125000 to Krell Distributing president John Krell, who renovated nearby facilities. Krell plans to use part of the space for his business and lease office space to the city for records storage under a two year 20000 contract. The project includes new windows, restored copr front doors and improved parking, with two prospective tenants eyed for first floor space. The 69 year old structure once housed the Syracuse Herald Journal and related papers before city ownership in 1971.
