Stranahan Wins British Amateur Golf Crown Again

Frank Stranahan of Toledo captured the British Amateur Championship for the second time at St Andrews, defeating Dick Chapman of Pinehurst in heavy wind and rain. Stranahan went four up by the 19th hole, finished 6 and 5, and completed a dominant run after Chapman struggled with the putter. The match, the second all American final in 58 years, included pace concerns and fierce winds shaping the rugged Royal and Ancient course.

Vet is Slain By Stranger at Nassau Bus Stop

Nassau County police hunted a tall silent assailant who stabbed a WW II veteran, Herbert W. Schwenk, 25, at a bus stop. Witnesses said the six foot killer followed Schwenk and his girlfriend after the bus ride, then stabbed him without a word and fled. Detective Chief Sluyvestant Pinnell urged about 75 passengers and others to come forward with any information. The motive remained unknown and the attacker described as a stranger to those aboard.
