In Syracuse 24 drunken driving arrests this month match December 1955 as a peak. Clayton H. Barnhart and James Warwick were jailed after crashes and pleaded or were remanded, with fines, suspensions, and bail set for May 31 appearances.
Secretary of State Dulles plans a ten day stay at his island retreat in Lake Ontario. The State Department said he would fly to Watertown North Carolina today then proceed to Duck Island and return to his office on June 4.

CHICAGO National Safety Council withholds its top safety award for 1955 citing a worsening US traffic safety picture. Only Minnesota and four cities Dallas Seattle Oklahoma City and Palo Alto earned merit awards for grades above 70 percent. Certificates of Achievement went to 24 states and 398 other cities. 195 cities had no traffic deaths in 1955 and 667 small towns were cited on a special honor roll.
The Colorado Public Utilities Commission ruled Thursday that dogs are not entitled to transfers on the Denver Tramway. They must pay full fares.
A 17 ton explosives laden truck collided with a car at Salina Street and Lafayette Avenue in Syracuse. Two in the car were injured, driver Noble Brandenberg was charged with transporting explosives without permission, and two injured passengers faced serious conditions.
Swantee a 20 year old chimpanzee at Como Park Zoo is to be shipped to Holloman Field New Mexico after threats of tossing objects at visitors. Lamont Kaufman park superintendent says the Air Force will sponsor the rocket ride and buy two more chimps from other zoos. Swantee was purchased a decade ago from the St Louis Zoo and listed for $400.
The Duke of Kent attended a boisterous River Thames debutante party aboard the Royal Princess with 300 guests. Lifebelts were tossed to two revelers who jumped in, later rescued by Sea Scouts. The event honored Felicity and Penelope Drew, presented at court last March, amid London social gaiety.
President Eisenhower proposed privately financed Point Four aid to combat Soviet influence in underdeveloped regions. He urged European allies to unite in a free united states of Europe and stressed expanding NATO into non military fields. UTICA A state trooper was critically injured when his patrol car missed a curve on Route 5 and hit two utility poles. Gerald T. McHugh 26 of West Winfield married father of one was alone on night patrol near the New Hartford substation. Fellow troopers thought he may have been pursuing a speeding motorist. He was taken to St Elizabeth Hospital Utica.
Democratic Representative William T. Granahan of West Philadelphia died at Fitzgerald Mercy Hospital at age 60. The longtime congressman served five terms over a 12 year period before his 1966 defeat and subsequent return to the House.

A live polio virus spill occurred when a Capital Airlines DC4 cargo crate was dropped at Washington National Airport. the inflight container released contents, prompting rapid immunization and medical precautions for crew, passengers, and airport workers.
