Secretary of the Interior Krug summoned John L. Lewis and the United Mine Workers negotiating committee before the two week soft coal truce expired. The government had seized mines last Wednesday and faced a decision on continuing operation next week. President Truman tied rail return to coal access, urging action without tying miners to rail workers.

The War Department has about 1,000 aircraft for priority cargoes as Naval Air Transport calls in 24 four engine planes from Pacific and Asiatic bases for support.
Trains moved on New York Central tracks as the nationwide rail strike entered its second day. By noon, no striking engineer or trainman had reported for work in Syracuse in response to President Truman's radio appeal per Syracuse division superintendent Philip E. Agens.
Despite a nationwide railroad strike, the Skaneateles Short Line Railroad operated today. Its five miles of track connect Skaneateles and Skaneateles Junction and continue freight service between the two terminals.
