Plan to drain wetlands irks Audubon and lawmakers

A draft USDA proposal would allow draining millions of acres from the Mississippi Delta to North Dakota prairie potholes and would exempt farmers nationwide from the 1990 law restricting subsidies for wetland drainage. FBI sting at O'Hare nets $100,000 in stolen goods

FBI and Chicago police used undercover baggage handling on the O'Hare tarmac for two years. Agent Norman Embry led Operation Grab Bag and exposed 16 handlers tampering with travelers' luggage. Night of violence leaves driver injured

A replacement driver, Gary Mauney of Fayetteville North Carolina, remained hospitalized in critical condition after a rock was allegedly thrown by two union members during the 16 day labor dispute with The New York Times. Mauney underwent more than 12 hours of surgery for a fractured skull and extensive facial reconstruction. Arrested on assault charges was Robert Boyle, a 27 year old union driver connected to the dispute.

France and Germany form joint NATO aligned corps

France and Germany announce a new joint army corps of at least 35,000 soldiers to strengthen NATO. They say the force will defend western Europe, carry out humanitarian and peacekeeping missions, and will be established by July 1 and operating by October 1, 1995. Ramos widens lead in Philippines race

Fidel Ramos led with about 59.69 percent of counted votes as of May 11 in Manila. Rival Eduardo Cojuangco trailed with 17.39 percent, Miriam Defensor Santiago at 17.22 percent, while Santiago began a protest fast at the Philippine Heart Center vowing to fast to death if fraud continues.

Weather prospects shift from heat to unsettled showers
