President Carter signed a major tax cut bill in a Rose Garden ceremony. The measure trims withholding, simplifies forms for about 50 million Americans using the standard deduction, and includes a new jobs credit for businesses hiring new workers.
The Supreme Court upheld the Watergate cover-up convictions of former Attorney General John D. Mitchell and aides H. R. Haldeman and John D. Ehrlichman. Mitchell and Haldeman free pending appeal. Ehrlichman already imprisoned. Justices rejected claims the June 1975 trial was unfair. no comment issued.
The Supreme Court ruled unanimously that agency shops valid for public employees may require dues even for nonmembers. Nonunion workers can ensure dues aren t used for political causes they oppose while dues may fund union activities. The ruling follows Watergate era coverage with no recorded dissents.
A single engine plane crashed into Trembleau Mountain near Keeseville in Essex County. all four aboard died and a forest fire of about five acres burned. Pilot identified as David Froelich of Cadyville. plane owned by Flying Nunn's Aviation, based at Clinton County Airport. FAA team dispatched from Albany to investigate.
Menahem Begin, 63, expected to be Israel's next prime minister, was hospitalized in the cardiac wing for observation after reporting not feeling well. Doctors stressed no heart attack. he had suffered one last March and was released April 13.
In Assen area two groups of South Moluccan extremists seized an elementary school housing 500 residents and hijacked a four car train during peak morning hours. About 105 children and six teachers were inside the school with additional hostages aboard the train. No casualties reported as police surrounded both sites and negotiators were not in contact by midday.
National Weather Service at Hancock Airport forecasts partly cloudy skies tonight and tomorrow with a 20 percent chance of rain. Lows near 60 and highs in the mid 80s, with mostly clear skies and warm temperatures statewide.
