A wave of panty raids hit twelve colleges with over twenty arrests as male students stormed dorms and sorority houses. Police clashed with attackers and tear gas was used at two campuses in Missouri and other states. Several injuries were reported but none serious as National Guardsmen assisted at Columbia Missouri amid continued unrest.

President Truman signed a bill increasing military pay and allowances by nearly 0.5 billion dollars annually. The boost, effective with this month’s vouchers, raises base pay four percent and allowances 14 percent for food and lodging. About 22 million active and retired personnel are affected, with $3 monthly bumps for privates and seamen and up to $365 for two star generals and admirals.
Bertha Ann Kraft received a divorce from Charles Kraft ex patrolman after testimony by Mary Lou Shattell alleging assault in Schiller Park on February 12. In Belem Brazil Captives reportedly overpowered their captors during a late night update as Maj Miranda Correa relayed a cryptic message. Three rescue planes with 38 Brazilian parachutists were dispatched from Rio de Janeiro to aid Scott A Magness and an American aviation official held by a crowd at the Pan American Stratocruiser crash site. The two officials were part of a Brazilian American expedition, while an unofficial private group reportedly sought to evacuate by airlift amid rising tensions with local newsmen and guides. The report notes the hostage situation involved about 35 Brazilians and others and references an on the scene broadcast from a handheld radio.
The weatherman predicted light showers tonight with cooler, cloudy conditions continuing tomorrow. LAS VEGAS NEV UP A scheduled atomic test failed for the second time at the Atomic Energy Commission Southern Nevada proving grounds. The detonation was to be the 18th nuclear explosion there but malfunction halted the test atop a 300 foot tower. Problems may have been in the firing maze or the device with a loose wire blamed for a prior failure.
Labor Secretary Tobin urged Congress to ratify President Truman's steel mill seizure if the Supreme Court strikes it down. He spoke before a Senate labor management subcommittee chaired by Senator Humphrey and preferred a short term fix to long range legislation.

An earthquake was felt in northern Japan early today near Tokyo. There were no reports of damage or injuries and residents were asked to stay alert for aftershocks.
Judge Truman H. Preston reopened the case of Detroit salesman Glen J. McNaughton Jr. after an appeal request. McNaughton, who had been sentenced to 60 days and fined 100 dollars, faced new bail of 3000 dollars and a Thursday appearance. Police say he rode at 85 mph on a motorcycle while fleeing patrolman Demperioy in central city streets.
