Morse Wins Oregon Primary for Senate Seat

Wayne Morse decisively defeated conservative challenger Dave Hoover to secure the Republican nomination. With 1,821 of 2,017 precincts reported, Morse led 64,270 to 37,417, as Hoover carried only two counties. John McBride trailed with 8,507 votes. Dems hope to win Oregon's GOP stronghold as primary season continues.

Preparedness Emphasis Marks Armed Forces Day Across Nation

President Truman and Defense Secretary Johnson urged extended draft and universal training during Armed Forces Day observances in major cities. Truman called for mobilizing strength and resources and recalled a 1915 message to Congress proposing universal training for all citizens to support national welfare and defense.

Action of the Atlantic Pact strengthens anti Communist defense

Warm Sunny Weekend Forecast by The Weatherman

The weatherman forecast a warm and sunny weekend after yesterday’s chilly spell. Fritz Schwarz, second assistant US meteorologist at Hancock Airport, cited a mass of high pressure from Eastern Canada past Syracuse as the cause of cooler conditions and heavier cloud cover. He said yesterday was eight degrees below normal and projected low of 42 tonight with clear skies and a high near 58 tomorrow. Winds to be easterly 20 to 15 mph, and Syracuse rainfall remains 28 inches below normal after Thursday and yesterday.

Tug Sinks After River Collision Near Melville

Six crewmen drowned when a tugboat struck a bridge support on the swollen Atchafalaya River near Melville Louisiana. The vessel sank in about 100 feet of water. Some crew were rescued.

Massive blast rips South Amboy injuring hundreds

A blast shattered South Amboy and nearby Perth Amboy as 600 tons of ammunition exploded, killing and injuring hundreds. The event caused millions in damage, drew Army, Marines, and Coast Guardsmen, and sparked fears of an atomic attack while authorities warned residents to avoid suspicious objects.

Quiet drizzly dusk as explosion blasts South Amboy

In South Amboy New Jersey 7 42 P M EST a massive explosion blew four ammunition barges from the waterfront. Debris filled the air as dock workers and residents watched in fear and pain. Rescue crews moved through wreckage amid screams and reports of casualties.
