Deaths: Lawrence Welk and notable figures mourned
Lawrence Welk died Sunday at his Santa Monica home ending a 30 year run entertaining millions with champagne music on television. Ivan Allen III, 53, Atlanta businessman and son of former mayor Ivan Allen Jr., was found dead at his farm in Franklin Georgia, a suspected self-inflicted death. William Lampe, 86, promoter of the interstate highway system and University of Miami co founder, died of cancer in Holly Hills Florida. Dr. Robert Warner, 80, pediatrician who helped develop a test saving thousands of children from mental retardation, died Sunday in Buffalo hospital. Other obituaries noted on Page B4.
