Unemployment in Central New York dropped to 3.7 percent in April, marking a record low for the month. The figure reflects continued strength in the local labor market with sustained hiring across sectors.

President Bush argues conservation can blend with expanded oil coal and nuclear energy as Congress debates energy policy. He cites a two-pronged plan directing federal agencies to consider energy in actions and to expedite energy related permitting while protecting the environment as he travels to Conestoga Pennsylvania and other states.
A Bush era energy plan backing new nuclear plants prompts a four company consortium to pursue regulatory approval for one or two reactors at existing sites. Entergy Nuclear, among others, considers a site at an existing plant to cut environmental review and grid costs, with local support likely rising near proposed facilities. Crawford notes possible location at the James A. FitzPatrick site in Oswego County or nearby areas.
Two votes needed to choose candidate. Kate O Connell, former Rape Crisis Center director, wins 53.5 percent in a runoff over Matt Driscoll after a lengthy party process at a Teamsters hall. City Auditor Minch Lewis exits, Joseph O Hara withdraws, O Connell pledges city wide rebuilding.
