Intrigue Behind Indy 500 Qualifying Drama Unfolds

Indy 500 qualifying in Indianapolis featured money and politics amid the final day bustle. Tim Richmond failed to grab a spot as Dennis Firestone qualified the STP backup car at 187.784 mph on the 10th row after a price-driven swap. Firestone’s sponsor bought the car for him, while Richmond’s UNO-backed offer to run the car for about 100000 dollars stood against Patrick’s sale to Jack Rhoades for 75000. Patrick, CART founder, signaled allegiance to CART backers in the USAC war, as veteran George Snider secured A J Foyt’s backup car and qualified 189.255 mph in the middle of the 10th row.

Heveron Dominates Canadian Classic at Ontario Speedway

Twenty-year-old Doug Heveron from Liverpool powered his Chevrolet roadster to a $3,500 victory in the 150-lap Canadian Classic at the five-eighths mile Ontario Speedway. Heveron led from early in the race as Eddie Bellinger and Warren Coniam pressed, with Coniam fading after fuel issues. Bellinger finished second, Gioia third, and others trailing as only 12 of 30 starters finished. Heavy rain in New York curtailed many events, but features at Lancaster, Canandaigua, and Fonda produced wins by Fidenza, Johnson, and McLaughlin among others, with several disqualifications for underweight cars.
