Former Rome officer linked to killings and self harm

Neighbors recall Joseph Merola a quiet man at 107 N Charles St in Rome. Police say he opened fire with a 9 mm pistol Saturday night, killing two teens Michael McSweeney 14 and Dell DiPasqua 15 and wounding two others before shooting himself. Witnesses say Brandon Lovett 15 and Ryan Jackson 14 were with the victims earlier at Stevenson Field. Merola had been off the force about a year and reportedly argued with youths about vandalism before the fatal shooting. Mayor Griffo called the scene emotional as investigators piece together events at the time.
