Pope urges Common Market to share food surpluses
Pope John Paul II urged the European Community to help those in Africa and elsewhere by sharing Europe’s food surpluses with the hungry. He warned against the egoistic pursuit of pleasure and said prosperity must reach the needy, while noting Luxembourg’s high living standards within the Common Market. He spoke during a mass in Luxembourg and ahead of a Belgium visit, stressing will to send fruits of the earth to those in absolute need.

Transportation bottlenecks threaten Sudan and Ethiopia relief
U N officials warn that delivery of 1.6 million tons of cereals pledged by foreign donors cannot be completed this year. Rail inadequacies, rolling stock shortages, and administrative delays slow food from Kosti to Nyala, while bandits menace Nyala routes. In Ethiopia, Assab bottlenecks curb shipments to a million farm families in food-for-work programs, despite $88 million spent by the WFP over three years.
