Congress may OK 40B Social Security savings
An unnamed Reagan official in Washington said Senate Republicans could push a $40 billion Social Security savings package through the Senate as part of the 1983 budget plan and keep it intact in negotiations with the House. The proposal, for three years beginning in 1983, would mix possible benefit cuts and tax changes, with details to await a bipartisan commission’s year-end report after the election. Opposition exists in both chambers, especially in the Democratic House, and Reagan avoided endorsing the plan at a Friday news conference.
