The Basque information service said a general strike paralyzing Bilbao steel industry expanded into Guipuzcoa, affecting San Sebastian and Los Pasages. Vizcaya officials claimed strikes there ended, while Bilbao dispatches said the government appeared to have broken the challenge to authority since the civil war.
Homicide inspectors considered a gangland rub out in the strangulation slaying of Nicholas DeJohn a 40 year old former Chicago hoodlum whose semi nude body was found in the trunk of his new automobile. DeJohn had been living in Santa Rosa, fifty miles north, and was identified by Chicago authorities as once a minor gang figure run out of Chicago by gambling interests.
A Tass dispatch quoted a Paris L Humanite writer alleging ex U S ambassador William C Bullitt was in France and engaged in intrigues with General Charles de Gaulle. The note ties Bullitt to alleged political maneuvering amid wartime power struggles in France.
Congress edges toward finalizing aid for Greece and Turkey as the House and Senate agree on minor changes to the Vandenberg and Baton measures. The plan calls for 100 million dollars from the Reconstruction Finance Corp and military and civilian missions. the full 400 million awaits further appropriation. The FBI will screen overseas personnel and confirmation of mission chiefs is omitted.

Washington Republicans press for the postal service to be self supporting amid worries over a projected 260 million dollar deficit this year. Senators Bridges and Ferguson accuse postmasters of cutting local services and misdirecting blame, urging firings and possible prison if needed. Postmaster General Donaldson pledges reforms.
