Researchers led by Richard Ellis and Mario Livio report that the Hubble Deep Field images show a time about 12 billion years ago when no galaxies existed yet. The long exposure captured more than 3,000 galaxies in a tiny sky wedge, offering a core sample of the early universe and a view back to roughly 10 percent of its current age.
