Steven Hirsch aged 13 of Norwich school became the first boy to win the local spelling bee. The event highlighted the advantage of boys in a competition long dominated by girls.
Virginia Charles Stevens reports 13 year old Steve Hirsch of Norwich Junior High School won the Herald Journal Herald American Spelling Bee at the Syracuse Museum of Fine Arts. He and his refugee family fled Germany in 1938 and later moved to Palestine before coming to the United States in 1940. He outspelled a field of entrants to win a trip to Washington, D C and a shot at the national title. He and his family expressed gratitude for the opportunities in America. The runner ups were Jill Senior and Gertrude De Santo.
Senator McCarthy charged the Truman administration with deceit over charges of government disloyalty and claimed loyalty files released to investigators were inadequate and phony. Pennsylvania Democrat Myers countered that no evidence supports the new accusations and that government employees have passed four years of loyalty checks.
National GOP leaders unleashed ten charges against the Truman administration as he kicks off a 16 state campaign tour. A GOP statement, led by Guy Gabrielson Owen Brewster and Leonard Hall, accuses Truman of aiding communists and blames the administration for China’s loss, signaling a new strategy to counter his campaign.
Defense Secretary Johnson praised the nation’s nurses during the second annual American Student Nurse Sabbath opening. The three day program, run by hospitals and churches nationwide, aims to bolster nursing ranks and stresses nurses’ role in sustaining morale and national health.

Middleground a King Ranch colt and son of Bold Venture surged to victory in the 76th Kentucky Derby before about 100000 fans. Apprentice jockey Willie Boland rode the Texas entry to beat Hill Prince by a length and a half with Mr Troubl third as Your Host faded after leading most of the race. The mile and a quarter ran 2 01.3 fifth seconds.
Elizabeth Taylor, age 18, married hotel heir Conrad Hilton Jr at the Church of the Good Shepherd in Beverly Hills. About 2,500 fans gathered outside as Taylor arrived in a billowing white gown, and the ceremony proceeded on time with no incident and a limousine arrival at 4 50 PM.
Secretary of State Dean Acheson heads to Europe with a stark warning that free nations must mobilize moral and material strength to counter communism. He will meet Bevin and Schuman in Paris and London and report to the North Atlantic Treaty Council on Germany Southeast Asia and Iran. The aim is a stronger mutual defense and a unified western community.
