Survival city reveals the atomic age lesson as an explosion wrecked homes along Doomsday Drive in Nevada. Fifteen Darling family members perished in a brick and block dwelling while a reinforced single story rambler endured better, underscoring that home design affects survival in a nuclear blast.
The United Auto Workers calls for two reserve funds of about 135 million dollars each at Ford and GM to finance a guaranteed annual wage. Powell, 43, of Bennett, Indiana Brewerton, was northbound on Thompson Road near South Bay Road at 12:20 AM when Shelley’s car struck him. the deputy sheriff’s vehicle trailed directly behind Powell as Shelley's car missed Reardon’s machine, then veered off the road into a strawberry bed owned by Ella Mae Wooding.
LAS VEGAS Nev The 141 and final test of the 1985 nuclear series will be postponed until Sunday at best due to technical difficulties from yesterday's 35 kiloton blast dust kickup. The test organization said weather forecasts caused further scheduling issues and no meetings will be held until then.
Mrs Hannah O Connor of Manhattan discovered a $10 bill misdated as a $100 note among her earnings. Experts say the note, a 150 million to one oddity, could be worth far beyond a $100 dealer bid. Her aim is to use the windfall to visit her father in Stuttgart Germany.
At St Brigid's School a Carol Snyder Day honors 13 year old eighth grader Carol Snyder who won the 1955 Herald-Journal Herald American Spelling Bee. The school cheers include kindergartners and first graders, with last a half day for 377 students as Jerald Renske notes pride.
Richard Denny of 600 S Crouse Ave awakened to a burglar in shorts, who fled as Denny yelled. Another intruder searched rooms with Friedman joining the alarm. A second thief escaped after dropping a 31 bill. Denny later found his $26 wallet was stolen.
Dennis J. Roberts today declined a $10,000 pay raise to $25,000 annually, vetoing a bill that would have given other state officers smaller increases. The Democrat governor said officers should not receive raises during a term they were elected to.
Austrian officials say a final settlement on the Austrian state treaty may be announced soon with only three points left. The talks center on compensation claims by American British and Dutch oil firms for properties seized by Nazis and later taken by the Soviets. In Washington the government reports April construction soared to a record pace, with total outlays nearing 37 billion dollars and private building rising, while overall federal financing declined.
A legislative committee was told in a closed session that 213 legal wiretaps are operating in New York State. The unnamed Telephone Company representative cited the figure while discussing legal interception of communications at a session of the Joint Legislative Committee to Study Legal Interception of Communications. The hearing was held in Baltimore.
Surgeon General Leonard Scheele told the House Banking Committee that federal review of additional Salk vaccine supplies is paused for several days while top scientists study the situation. Production continues and the National Foundation for Infantile Paralysis will receive vaccines for free inoculations in first and second grades.
