Near West Side Syracuse Faces Crime and ReBuild Setbacks

The Holland Street neighborhood, once thriving, suffered from gunfire and poverty concentrated in 10 census tracts. Longtime resident Margaret Kelly recalls changes from prosperity to decay, while ReBuild Syracuse funded home purchases to spur revival. After political shifts, housing efforts faded as the market collapsed and vandalism rose.

Neighborhood partners form anti violence effort in Syracuse tract

A three year collaboration of government, churches and neighborhood groups targets 10 Syracuse census tracts on the south, southwest and west sides to curb youth gun violence. The project will examine causes such as unemployment, poverty, drugs and health issues while profiling residents and frontline workers.
