British reinforcements pour into Jerusalem and halt Arab and Jewish shelling under a firm cease fire order. Sir Henry Gurney reports sufficient troops arriving to control the situation as negotiations with Arab and Jewish leaders continue amid mandate tensions.

A bomb mailed to Capt. Roy Farran, marked for death by the Jewish underground in Palestine, exploded in his home in Wolverhampton England, killing his 26 year old brother Rex. Farran, a former army officer, had escaped earlier attempts on his life and was recently out of the service.

Auckland reporting Mount Nenuruhoe on North Island erupted today sending hot boulders as large as houses. Two climbers retreated to safety as witnesses described the event.
New tenants occupy 60 Morningside Drive in New York as Gen. and Mrs. Dwight D. Eisenhower move in. About 200 neighbors greet them with welcomes on arrival. Ike waves to the crowd and recalls his son served in the same outfit. He had just said goodbye to the Army at Fort Myer before driving in.
Mediator Frank Douglass said both railroad labor and management are far apart on wage and rules issues delaying a joint meeting. Three all brotherhoods have set May 11 for a nationwide strike. He has met them separately to narrow the dispute and avert the walkout.
The 27lb British Industries Fair opened today in London and Birmingham drawing hundreds of overseas buyers. The exhibition showcases fabrics machinery and numerous products as Britain bids to expand export markets with exhibitors declaring We Can Deliver the Goods.
Bridgeport Connecticut dispatch says the FBI was asked to investigate the disappearance of five year old James Frederick who has been missing from his home since April 26. The father Louis J Frederick says he believes someone abducted the boy and carried him away.
In Chicago a large picket line blocked a Wilson Packing back-to-work effort eight weeks into a nationwide meat strike. Police counted about 1,500 pickets as ramps opened for roughly 10 trucks carrying hides away from the plant. At nearby Swift & Co a two-truck convoy of lambs moved through the line.
In a May 1 letter to Roman Catholic bishops a Vatican note reports Pope Pius XII calls for special prayers during May for peace in Palestine and for mutual peace among all people and social classes.
London reports the United States Britain and France reject Yugoslavia’s claims backed by Russia for a large zone in southern Austria. Yugoslavia prepares for war and plans to keep about 800 square miles of Carinthia and Styria as a disputed region valued at about 150 million dollars.
Myron C Paylor is in Paris on a special mission for the President. He states he works for Mr. Truman and lets him do the talking.
Syracuse attorney Lewis C. Ryan, former state bar president, quits his bid for the U S district judge appointment in the Northern District of New York. He says he never intended to be a candidate and supports the Bar Association view that political factors should not influence the post.
Greek authorities said the assassin of Justice Minister Christos Jundas confessed to acting on Communist party orders. He died after eight gunshot wounds from a May Day grenade attack on his car. Funeral services were scheduled today.
In Redondo Beach California lifeguards Joe Potts and Wallace Bennett assisted at the birth of a baby at Mrs. Lillian Llamas home. A physician arrived later and praised their timely aid. The baby girl weighed seven pounds and was named Lorraine.
The Weather Bureau reports no rain for Syracuse with clear to partly cloudy skies. Andrew P. Keller explains a stalled moisture system due to a northern high pressure, forecasting moderate today, cooler tonight, with highs around 65 to 67 and a low near 36 to 43. Record crowds enjoyed outdoor activities as rain failed to arrive.
Navy and police investigated reports of an underwater volcanic activity off the north shore of Oahu near Honolulu Hawaii. Officials confirmed no immediate danger to ships or residents as crews assessed the situation and monitored the area.

The House Armed Services Committee approved a two year selective service bill by a 28 to 5 vote. President Truman named Howard Bruce of Baltimore to be deputy administrator of the foreign economic cooperation program. Bruce, 68, will serve under ECA administrator Paul G. Hoffman after the Senate confirms the nomination.
About 100 technical air force and transport command soldiers report for duty at Tripoli Army Air Base Mellaha. They arrived from New York City yesterday aboard the Army transport Gen. C. C. Ballou, which also brought 45 vehicles.
An all coach Baltimore and Ohio Columbian train derailed at West Newton 28 miles east of Pittsburgh. More than 100 passengers in the two cars escaped unharmed.
