The Herald-Journal hosts a public Spelling Bee at Lincoln Auditorium Central High School with 2000 seats. 35 top spellers from 72,000 eligible pupils compete under National Bee rules, with a 3 PM radio broadcast and prizes including a Washington trip and cash awards.
A House passed bill extends rent control with local option for cities counties to decide. It cleared 204 to 182 and moves to the Senate where the local option feature is favored. The measure would continue controls from June 30 to December 31 and allow the President to extend them to March 31, 1948 by proclamation.
The Weather Bureau forecast keeps Syracuse cool with a few more showers from the West. The last rain should end before Saturday, then a dry but cool spell will prevail.

An old woman in Veljun declares the village of widows needs men to bear children after about 600 male residents were killed by Ustashi forces. Survivors, including a dozen men from resistance and camps, return to help. President Truman signed an appropriations bill authorizing 1.8 billion dollars for the Veterans Administration enabling resumption of monthly unemployment and education payments to about 2.78 million war veterans. The measure also funds social security grants, relief by the Army in occupied countries, school lunch programs, and Army pay raises totaling over 2.8 billion dollars.
Elmer Sands, 2, is missing in a wooded section of eastern Pennsylvania near Tunkhannock Creek. Five planes joined the search after the child was reported missing yesterday, with scores of neighbors, Boy Scouts and state police continuing the hunt through the night.

In Terre Haute Indiana workmen began sealing off the Spring Hill mine scene of Wednesday’s explosion that killed eight men. The blaze forced postponement of the investigation for 30 to 60 days while inspectors prepared to resume once the fire burns out.
Britain said Jews should be given a voice in the United Nations Palestine debate if a legal hearing could be found. Sir Alexander Cadogan spoke to newsmen as the General Assembly's steering committee began discussion on the issue in New York.
