War memory and a soldier named Dieter in Vietnam
In a Vietnam foxhole Dieter recalls shared brownies and a comrade named Vester who died by a hand grenade. The 82nd Army veteran and his unit face destruction as they face the end of the war. The column by Sean Kirst notes the toll, the veterans, and a bittersweet final memory on a farm anniversary.
