The Pyramid Cos. opened a new mall in Cheektowaga near Buffalo, delivering Italian marble floors and a 53 foot high Teflon coated fabric ceiling akin to the Carrier Dome. It previews Carousel Center in Syracuse with upscale retailers and a central feature five stories tall.
In Deidesheim, West Germany, Chancellor Kohl and Prime Minister Thatcher clashed over NATO disarmament strategy. They left unresolved their positions ahead of the May alliance summit, with Thatcher opposing Kohl's plan to postpone upgrading short-range missiles until 1992 and urging talks with Moscow on reductions.
State police and Onondaga County officials revealed a six month undercover operation netting nearly 712 pounds of cocaine and $35000 in cash along with two handguns and a van. Ten people were arrested after a high speed chase on Taft Road near Hancock International Airport amid a series of raids. Police described the operation as the biggest drug bust of the year with as many as 80 officers involved.
