ALBANY AP Final agreement reached on a New York state budget totaling about 35.6 billion dollars negotiated by Gov. Mario Cuomo and legislative leaders. The current fiscal year budget stands at 32 billion with no increases to personal income, sales, or corporate taxes and no major tax cuts. Cuomo praised the deal after a late-night meeting, noting added funds from federal sources and higher expected state revenues.
The 52 year old New Jersey native Donald Merritt was arraigned on second degree murder and weapons charges for the fatal shooting of his wife Bonnie in Liverpool. He was held without bail at the Public Safety Building after arriving from Washington D C and was accompanied by two officers. Reporters were barred from the arraignment, and the defendant made no statements. A hearing to pursue grand jury action is expected next week.
