A report says surprise Russian landing parties at Arctic beachheads behind the left invasion flank, with Soviet sea and air attacks, are making the German Army's position before Murmansk extremely difficult. A new Soviet drive below Leningrad has gained eight miles.
Soviet communique details the Kalinin Front clash where Germans using a motorized regiment an SS division and 50 tanks retreated with heavy losses. Moscow reports new Urals trained divisions joining the offensive while Red Star notes Soviet Navy sinking German ships supplying Norway and Finland. Advices from London cite thaw turning fronts to mud hindering movement.
Washington March 28 The Senate investigating committee has evidence warranting a probe of the wartime aviation gasoline program. It cites claims Standard Oil of New Jersey helped establish German refining plants before the war and alleges independent firms were denied access to 100 octane fuel contracts. The panel will hear Standard Oil officials Tuesday as it probes the broader synthetic rubber program and past Nazi ties.
Charles A. Lindbergh will start work Monday at Ford Motor Company Willow Run bomber plant in an undisclosed supervisory role in the engineering department. Ford offered the job after an inspection tour as the plant nears completion. Lindbergh, a former Air Corps Reserve colonel, resigned before Pearl Harbor and later engaged in a civilian mission with the War Department.
Gowanda leather plant workers resume duties after a two day walkout under an agreement. Conference led by Manager W. S. Powell C. Ls Michials U. S. Conciliator Jarras Cerro and Dr. Thomas Norton of the Mediation Board produced the settlement.

Gov Harold E Stassen was commissioned a lieutenant commander in the Navy and prepared to step down as Minnesota’s governor to assume active military duty. South Africa Prime Minister Jan Smuts told Witwatersrand University that the Axis would suffer a colossal crash ending the war and that its fall would open a chance to rebuild the world on fairer lines. He argued the Axis cannot win or even stalemate.
U S Attorney William Fleet Palmer said vigilantes intercepted a traveling Japanese family just past the California Arizona line and forced them from their truck containing a 50 gallon drum of gasoline then set it on fire. He warned against outlaw conduct and urged fair treatment, noting reprisals feared by U S personnel.
Washington March 28 Price administrators warned butchers to keep pork product prices within mid March levels or face strict action. OPA consumer division director Dan A West urged buyers to report any marked price rises on ham bacon chops and related items as wholesale ceilings based on March 3 to 7 figures already apply. West noted current pork prices near record highs for the season and limited supplies while stressing meat dealers have an obligation to public health.
Memphis reports eight pound Danny Michael Flanigan born March 28 as 1 in 560,000 in the odds. His line includes three living grandmothers on his mother’s side and a lengthy paternal lineage. His parents are 16 year old June Flanigan and 22 year old Eliver Flianigan.
Unofficial reports say Canadian paratroops seized fortified buildings at St Nazaire and fought on into the afternoon though possibly overwhelmed. The St Nazaire operation stood as the boldest of five invasion thrusts aimed at Norwegian and French coasts since the Commandos began. The raid sought to disrupt German defenses and complement RAF efforts against German industry while pressuring German lines ahead of a spring push in Russia.
American pilots in the Second Eagle Squadron are assigned to daylight raids over France after escorting convoys. The unit has conducted low altitude attacks on continental targets, including German supply lines and French factories. The Third Squadron is credited with half a Dornier 217 shot down during combat with Eagles and a British flight.
Fall River Mass March 28. Chairman Charles H Cole of the State Board of Arbitration said a five day walkout involving 17000 employees of a score of cotton cloth mills might be settled in time for workers to return to war production jobs by Monday. Rival union leaders would meet today and possibly confer with each other by Sunday. The walkout began Tuesday in response to a National Labor Relations Board ruling on craft versus industrial union organization. 1500 independent union members participated as room fixers slasher tenders and knot tiers, reducing material supply and increasing idle workers.
David Rockefeller, 26, youngest son of John D. Rockefeller Jr., plans to join the Army. He winds up personal affairs to fight under the Stars and Stripes alongside his brother Lieutenant Winthrop Rockefeller. He is married with a baby son and has worked since last October as an assistant to Anna M. Rosenberg, regional director of the Office of Defense Health and Welfare Services.
Governor Lehman signed a bill allowing insurers writing personal injury liability to include in policies the obligation to pay medical, hospital, surgical and funeral benefits to persons killed or injured, regardless of legal liability for the insured.
Italian broadcasts report Axis raiders struck at Valletta and Mersali Sirocco harbors sinking one merchant vessel and damaging a cruiser and two destroyers. They say 8,000 ton ship set on fire and anti-aircraft fire silenced. Tobruk port facilities bombed and one merchant vessel hit. RAF raids on Patras cited with minimal damage.

Observers say the Japanese aim to finish the conquest before late April to enable shorter lines to the Southwest Pacific. Corregidor stood under seven attacks with most bombs landing in the bay and only light damage reported. Wainwright’s gunners have downed eight planes this week and claimed at least 24 total. Yamashita’s forces press toward Bataan despite a 10 to 1 advantage as reinforcements arrive.
Premier Mussolini spoke at ceremonies marking the 19th anniversary of the Fascist air force. He asserted Italy and the Axis fight to liberate the nation and break what he called a foreign chain. He denounced a Demo-Plutocratic-Bolshevik alliance and conferred medals on air force members.
