The Senate approved a ten percent pay increase for postal workers by 72 to 21, despite the threat of a presidential veto. The move beats the administration’s 7.6 percent proposal and stages a rebuff to executive dictates as Republicans split their support. The bill would raise pay at least ten percent for all employees, with higher boosts for some.
Washington report says the House Appropriations Committee blasted Agriculture Department management and called for 878,625,391 dollars in cash and 385 million in lending authority for next fiscal year. The panel faulted Benson and the Commodity Credit Corporation, noting declining farm income and rising costs with farmers’ share of the consumer dollar slipping from 54 to 43 percent since 1945.

The Air Force cancelled orders for more than 1300 GE jet engines saying current stock lasts longer than expected and fewer engines are needed. At about 50000 each, the cutback affects a multi million dollar backlog. GE engines power PAT Stratojet bombers and other aircraft.
A University of Minnesota surgeon used a dog's lung to keep 3-year-old Calvin Richmond alive while closing three small heart holes. The dramatic first involved cross circulation and dry surgery to allow the surgeon to see the heart. Calvin, injured in a truck crash, was reported in good condition after the Wednesday operation in Minneapolis.
Mrs Margaret Deike of Detroit, 28, describes being flabbergasted when she delivered an eight-pound son after going to a hospital for stomach pain. She did not expect the birth.

Gene Mayo a 27 year old from 219 Sedgewick street was stopped by Deputy Sheriff Arthur Kasson for speeding on Route 11 near Darwin Avenue at 86 mph. Heavy snow hindered pursuit and Mayo fled to Castle Inn Nedtaw and Route 11 A toward the Onondaga Indian Reservation before veering into a ditch. His license was revoked and Mayo said he drank beer to clear his head.
