A high pressure system moves east tonight bringing a mild spell with lows in the 40s. A weak front crosses Central New York bringing clouds and a few showers. Highs surge into the 60s tomorrow, then Sunday turns cooler with clouds and light rain and snow showers.
A slow moving storm system that dumped rain on the southern Plains pushed into the Great Lakes region early today as another front brought light precipitation across nearby areas. The system prompted weather advisories and minor impacts on travel and outdoor plans.
The extended forecast shows heavy snow in the Rockies with up to 3 inches possible in high elevations. Much of the Mississippi Valley should see rain, and scattered storms with hail and 40 mph winds are possible in Texas and along the Gulf Coast. Highs range from 40s to 80s across regions, with Kingsville Texas hitting 94 and West Yellowstone 0. Hutchinson Kansas records 2.7 inches of rain, the nation's highest.
Doppler radar reveals twisting winds in severe thunderstorms signaling possible tornado development. The Doppler effect causes raindrops moving toward the radar to have different pitches than those moving away, giving forecasters an early warning cue.
