Pope seeks links to Chinese Catholics
Pope John Paul II celebrated an extraordinary mass in St. Peter's Basilica for Chinese Catholics and urged normal links with the Vatican. He called on about 40,000 worshippers in St. Peter's Square to pray for the Chinese church while noting the plight of imprisoned clergy and the patriotic church regime. Fifteen cardinals attended as Beijing's tensions with Rome persisted and the mass was broadcast to China.

Gold price fall ends inflation era in 1980s lens
