Washington senators predicted a tight vote on a proposed constitutional amendment to split a state's electoral votes. The measure requires 64 favorable votes with two-thirds of those voting. The debate stretched into a third day as Mundt called it touch and go to reach the necessary majority.
Three teens died and a fourth was critically injured when an automobile collided with a New York Central freight train at the Water Street crossing in Fredonia. Victims: Donald P. Carlson 19 driver, Philip P. Sullivan 17 and Theodore G. Thorp 29, all of Stockton. John D. Storey 19 of Stockton in critical condition at Brooks Memorial Hospital. The all freight line runs from Dunkirk through Jamestown into Pennsylvania.
Police stopped H Verlin Morris in Ventura as talk of an amendment to reallocate electoral votes stirred political dispute. The plan would let states choose electors, affecting presidential outcomes by giving more weight to small states. Senator Lehman called it political hash, warning it could boost influence for one-party, low turnout states.
