The Bareh survey by the Auburn Employment Security Office shows 1,000 more workers in Auburn area factories on Feb 15 than a year earlier, with total payroll at 8,900. Most gains come from ordnance plants as 87 non farm firms employ 10,751 and plan early spring payroll increases.
Mrs. Elizabeth Irland of 33 Grover street announces the engagement of daughter Mary Louise Irland to George W. Vreeland son of Mr and Mrs Wallace Vreeland of Union Springs. Miss Irland is a graduate of East High School and Auburn Business School. Vreeland is a Union Savings Central School and Auburn Business School graduate and a World War I veteran. The wedding will be in Sun set.
Martin Gage Jr son of Mr and Mrs Martin Gage of Red Creek was killed in Korea where he served as a tank driver. A Defense Department telegram was received by his aunt and uncle in Red Creek. He had written the day before of coming home and a hoped for furlough. Survived by parents sister Vera brothers Herbert and Frank grandmother Aya Gage and cousin Arvin Hyatt. he had enlisted during high school and hoped a military career.
A juvenile, 18, who fled Syracuse State School on August 20 1951, was detained near Auburn after being found riding a bike. Robert DeWolf of Port Byron RD 1 is to hold funeral services tomorrow at Dwinnell Theological Seminary grounds Port Byron Federated Church. Burial will be in Mount Pleasant cemetery Port Byron. The exact whereabouts during the absence could not be recalled by Captain Robert J. Riley. Reverend Warren Harris will conduct the service.
Authorities delayed releasing a sanity report on Hugh Sasit Tilkins of Auburn who admitted stabbing his friend Cpl Charles J. Curtiss in Curtiss home kitchen. Tilkins was returned to Cayuga County after over a month at Willard State Hospital for sanity evaluation. The report was mailed to Auburn Recorder John L. Naskiewicz and would be temporarily withheld.
AUBURN 23 year old Hugh Basil Tilkins was brought back to Auburn with a second degree murder charge in the Feb 5 slaying of Corp. Charles J. Curtiss USAF at the latter's home on Walnut Street. Tilkins is confined for a sanity exam and awaiting arraignment. The case proceeds under Recorder Naskiewicz with the Willard director stating the exam report is in process. Local notes mention heavy sports and community events across Massena Aurora Geneva and Potsdam with Red Cross appeals and a Syracuse game fundraiser planned after a basketball match between Syracuse University and the visiting team.

William E Lane died early Thursday at his home 162 Cayugast following an illness of six weeks. A retired nickel plater from L C Smith and Corona, he was born November 36 1882 in Brycelyn Minnesota. He lived in Groton 41 years and belonged to the Groton Rod and Gun Club. Survived by wife Lida Searles Lane and son Lawrence of Groton, grandson Marshall of Sampson Air Force Base, and brother Orville Lane of Seneca Castle. Funeral Saturday at 2 PM at Robert J Booth funeral home with Rev Russell J Clair officiating. Burial in North Lansing Cemetery. Friends may call Friday at the funeral home.
Surrogate's Court issued letters of administration in the estate of Dr. Salvatore V. Martino of Auburn. The estate is valued about 136,000. William S. Elder Jr. is the attorney for the petitioner. The will of Paul H. Schneider was probated with letters testamentary to Madeline Schneider. Life use of the estate goes to Maude Schneider to be divided at her death among the decedent's children. Mosher & Schneider represent the petitioner.
The engagement of Theresa Gleason to Thomas Forness is announced by Mr. and Mrs. Joseph Gleason of 83 Mynierfest. Miss Gleason, a New York State College for Teachers graduate, teaches at Canandaigua Academy. Forness is a service manager at East Motors.
Mrs Mary Sparks 63 wife of Alva Sparks of Owasco Street, Seneca Falls, died Wednesday afternoon at Geneva General Hospital after a Beeliner Diesel engine crash near Grantville. Funeral services tomorrow at Arthur J. Rolling Funeral Home with Rev Rob Paul officiating. Burial will be in Soule Cemetery.

Revue includes Sayko sisters Nutting Derevenko Hetherington Harris Connie Short and Carmincelli in varied acts at Moravia Central School auditorium tonight at 8 PM.
AUBURN St Alphonsus Commandery 362 hosts the second annual day of recollection for the Knights of St John from Holy Trinity St Daniel's and other parishes.
