McCarthy names top Russian agent tied to State Department

Senator Joseph McCarthy announced to newsmen that he has given the Senate committee the name of the top Russian espionage agent he says is tied to the State Department. Assembly Final OK on Thruway Authority

Albany officials report Governor Dewey’s plan to form a public authority to build and operate a $450 million New York Thruway passed the Senate and faced Democratic opposition in the Assembly. The measure would create a three member board to finance a 500 mile superhighway and place state credit behind $500 million in bonds. The vote was party line 31 to 25 with GOP support and Democratic opposition.

ALBANY AP Arthur Robertson of New York City named by Governor Dewey as General Gordion of the State Liquor Authority faced confirmation. The evacuation of 2000 foreigners and 300 Americans was halted after Chinese authorities and Communists refused landing craft entry to Shanghai. The America President liner mission to rescue evacuees along the Yangtze River was blocked, delaying the westbound evacuation.

Bulgarians Arrest 26 in Plot to Overthrow Government

About 100 Shanghai bound Yugoslavs and 20 Bulgarians were arrested for conspiring to overthrow the government. The indictment accuses 23 defendants of spying for Yugoslavia. The group had been living aboard and disembarked today as the judgment was announced.

Taxes Paid March 17 Totaling $446 Million

United States Treasury reported March 17 tax payments at about $446,869,025, released the day after the March 15 deadline for 1949 income tax returns.
