SU grad's Spain trip ends in drug charge
Conan Owen a 22 year old Virginia native and former Syracuse University photography student is jailed in Barcelona after Spanish authorities arrested him on cocaine possession. Family and friends insist he was an innocent traveler targeted by smugglers. Owen, a May 1986 Newhouse graduate and Army ROTC graduate, was on a freelance photography assignment to Chile and Spain when authorities say he received a bag that contained drugs. His father Ernest Owen said a hearing was to be held before a Spanish administrator. The U.S. Embassy and Consulate were closed for a holiday.
