Grow Own Fuel Forester Tells Farm Home Week Audience

At Cornell Farm and Home Week 1953 Prof. Fred E. Winch Jr. urged using home grown fuel to cut farm costs. He praised wood burning equipment and noted sawdust and wood chips as fuels. James Layne defended snakes and highlighted limited venom in New York’s snakes. Roland Wigley discussed sea lamprey impacts and control ideas. Edward Pepe advised teens on dating during campus visits. The event runs through Friday with 500 lectures and exhibits.

Evacuation Survey Finish Due Today in Owego

Owego plans to complete an evacuation survey today led by village civilian defense chairman John E. Sweet. Two percent of homes remain unsurveyed and will be visited from noon to 7 30 p.m. The survey data is compiled by Mrs Charles B Estey.

Dr Moett Heads Training At Cortland State College

Soldier Hurt As His Car Strikes Tree

Gen Eva police report Sgt John Henry Buttick a 31 year old Sampson air policeman injured when his car struck a tree along Lake street near the Seneca Lake seawall. He sustained mild concussion multiple lacera tions and head abrasions and was found bleeding from head cuts in his stalled car. He offered no reason for the accident and his car was badly damaged.

Six Injured In Collision On Hogansburg St Regis Road

Massena reports six persons injured in a collision of two cars at 12 45 am on the Hogansburg St Regis highway. Names include Jake Jock 38 with contusions, Alex Jock with a lacerated nose and left eyebrow, Mrs Louis Jock with facial lacerations, William Lazore with facial injuries, Mrs Anna Buckshot with facial and knee injuries, and Thomas Lazare with possible rib fractures. Jock said he was driving north toward St Regis when another car approached from the opposite direction guiding both vehicles into roadside ditches.

4-H Rally Scheduled for June 14 in Watertown

WATERTOWN The annual 4-H rally for Jefferson County will be held in Watertown on Saturday, June 14, tied to the Dairyland Festival. The event includes an 11:30 parade and features by the agricultural committee of the chamber of commerce.

Cancer Films Will be Part Of Exhibit

FHACA Three motion pictures in cancer will be sponsored by the Health and Safety Committee of the New York State Extension Service in Martha Van Rensselaer Hall. The Tompkins County Branch of the American Cancer Society and the Cancer Committees support the Tompkins County Medical Society. Dr F E Sutton will speak and lead the discussion for Cancer of the Breast shown tomorrow at 12. Slides illustrate all cases. The film A Question in Time will be shown Wednesday at 9 AM with Dr Edward F Hall as discussion leader. Thursday at 10 AM offers two short fins From One Cell and The Doctor Speaks His Mind, illustrating cells and late cancer care.

Augustinian quintet wins Northern NY Catholic tourney

The Augustinian Academy of Carthage defeated Mount Assumption Institute of Plattsburgh 48 to 40 to claim the Northern New York Catholic high school basketball league championship at Plattsburgh. St Johns of Plattsburgh beat Immaculate Heart Academy of Watertown 44 to 36 in the consolation. The Augustinians won the western division while Mount Assumption took the eastern title, the first western winner since 1945.

Watertown Wins Section Three Tournament Title

Watertown High School clinched the Section Three playoff berth by defeating Black River 36 to 34 at Watertown High. Charley Siragusa moved up from Jayvee to score a late free throw, followed by Brian Hanlon hitting one of two with three seconds left. West Carthage beat Sandy Creek 155-52 in the consolation.

WATERTOWN The second Jefferson county 4-H club dairy tour will be Saturday at 10 AM, starting at the Porterdale farm on Dry Hall. Glenn C Porter and sons own the Ayrshires herd to be inspected, then the group will tour to the Hudson Bull farm at Rutland Center to judge Jerseys and Holsteins. David Porter, a 1952/4 member of the state 4-H judging team, will instruct on judging, with Preston T Roberts as official judge.
