In Washington the House Senate Labor Committee demanded from John L Lewis and soft coal operators a full 48 hours of pension dispute facts. The dispute has shut most soft coal mines in 14 states, leaving more than 350000 miners idle. Government panels opened hearings in Chicago on a wage dispute affecting 100000 CIO United Packing House workers, as the coal strike raises pension questions for miners over age 60.
Hospital officials fought to save the left leg of Rodger Cooper 27 a former paratrooper who crawled four miles in a 31 hour ordeal after a snow slide trapped him on Mr Morrison Mountain near Randolph He survived the ordeal but faced severe injury and possible amputation.
The city’s barbershops shut for the first time this week under a union closing rule and will remain closed every Wednesday. Sam Kruth announced full cooperation among 275 shops with new hours from 8 AM to 6 PM daily including Saturday, and a five day week is planned if holidays fall on other days. The closing committee, appointed at a recent meeting, toured the city and included Kruth, McDonough, Asprinio, Casamiro, and Tucci.
Our Lady of Pompeii Italian School kept St Patrick’s Day as a holiday for students while the Franciscan Sisters of the Immaculate Conception, with roots in Ireland, received a holiday on their feast day. Since St Francis Day fell on a Saturday, the nuns picked March 17 for their one day off.
President Truman arrives in New York to view the St Patrick’s Day parade with Gov. Dewey. About 80 000 marchers are expected as he attends the event and later addresses the Friendly Sons of St Patrick.
