Mexico protest over jailed priests calls for release
Thousands demonstrated Wednesday over the arrest of two Mexican priests linked to the March 7 murder of two policemen. The Rev Jeronimo Hernandez Lopez and Rev Jose Luis Gonzalo Rosas Morales deny the charges. Local clergy decried government harassment while officials say the action is criminal, not political. In Chiapas, a history of land conflict colors the protest as at least 3,000 participants stayed for Mass.

Nine Southern Baptist Foreign Mission Board workers evacuated Albania on Wednesday as violence in the south grew and the country buckled toward anarchy. The group relocated to Greece, Macedonia and Bosnia, part of a total 18 missionaries in the nation. Earlier in March the remaining workers were evacuated. The United States ordered 160 government staffers to depart and urged 2,000 private citizens to evacuate. Twelve missionaries were moved to Bosnia to assist church planting efforts.

First U S synagogue roots trace to 1654 in New York
New York’s Shearith Israel traces its origins to 1654 when 23 Jews fleeing oppression in Brazil aboard a Dutch vessel arrived at New Amsterdam. The group formed America’s first Jewish congregation, later building a synagogue on a site facing Central Park. The remnant of Israel, as they called themselves, grew into a community that later included notable figures such as Judith Kaye and Benjamin Cardozo.

The rise of multidenominational ministry programs around Seattle
Seattle area sees a surge in training for pastors and lay ministers with Catholic Jesuit led initiatives at Seattle University launching an ecumenical Institute for Ecumenical Theological Studies.
