Temperatures to rise as showers likely tomorrow in Central New York

Central New Yorkers should trade parkas for raincoats as temps warm overnight. The National Weather Service at Hancock Airport forecasts low near 25 tonight with flurries, rising to mid 40s and possible showers. Precipitation chance increases from 30 to 50 percent overnight, with cooler temperatures Monday and a warmup Tuesday and Wednesday.

Fire kills 19 in Chicago four-story apartment blaze

A smoky pre dawn fire swept the upper floors of a four story apartment building on the North Side killing 19 and injuring 12. Police said many rooms lacked functioning smoke detectors with some being without batteries. Deputy fire chief Edward Altman urged attention to detector upkeep.

Resident dies in Oswego County house fire

An unidentified resident per Oswego County Fire Control died this morning as flames engulfed a residence in a small Oswego County village. Details were scarce as authorities worked to locate next of kin before noon. Fire Control received the alarm at 8 10 a m and sent units from Richland Laconia and Orwell to the scene.

Baby found in trash heap saved by janitor

In Chicago a janitor nearly activated a trash compactor before hearing cries and discovering a four or five day old baby boy in diapers atop a garbage heap. The infant was taken to Mercy Hospital and Medical Center in good condition after exposure treatment. Diapers and a formula bottle were found nearby.

Libya rejects hostage swap over Damascus plan

In a late move Libya balked at a swap that would free more than 100 hostages from a Pakistan Airlines hijacking. Libyan Foreign Minister told a Pakistani envoy in Tripoli that Libya would not receive freed political prisoners or hijackers, delaying the release and leaving hostages still in captivity.

No El Salvador buildup warned by top senators to Reagan

Senators on the Appropriations Committee warned President Reagan that Congress will not back any military escalation in El Salvador. Hatfield said committee members made clear they will not support expansion and officials assured them El Salvador will not become a Vietnam type conflict. New York to enforce cradle to grave waste manifest system soon

Albany officials say a state manifest system will curb illegal dumping by tracking hazardous waste at every step from generator to dumper. Screeners select Clark to lead GOP

A 39 year old Brooklyn GOP leader named George Clark was chosen by a 33 member screening committee to head the New York State Republican Committee, replacing Bernard Kilbourn. The full 402 member Republican State Committee will decide next Friday in Albany, with potential opposition from Erie County Chair Victor Farley and former Onondaga County Chair Richard Hanlon.
