About 100 Internal Revenue Bureau staff opened 40 000 letters dumped in the bureau as Central New Yorkers rush to beat the March 15 deadline. Collector Frank J. Shaughnessy said 250 employees work full time in the Federal building on income tax alone and expects 300 000 more returns by Thursday morning.
Katherine Keifer 18 of Lowville and Niles Lehman 20 of Kirschnerville were found dead in a parked sedan behind Schantz Brothers Garage. Coroner Dr. L M Campbell ruled accidental carbon monoxide poisoning, about eight hours since death. couple planned to marry per Louis Meda. Jacob Pat of the Jewish Labor Committee states that Russian Jews are being moved to Siberia for nonconformity to the Communist mold. He adds no Jews are allowed to emigrate to Israel from Russia, which Russians view as an American British colony.
Senator McCarthy alleged a former Navy commander, Stephen Brunauer, is an admitted Communist and urged an investigation. He also accused State Department officials, including Haddore Hanson and Esther Caulkin Brunauer, of Communist sympathies while noting John Lattimore’s role as a top adviser. Lattimore defended himself, and Mrs. Lattimore disputed the allegations.
