In Huntsville Texas six of nine corrections board members said they would vote to block televising the execution of James David Autry, who seeks a public broadcast to show what an execution is like. The state attorney general called the idea logical but a majority disagreed after a AP survey. Autry, 29, is to die by lethal injection before sunrise, claiming innocence in a 1980 murder. He argues public viewing could deter crime. Governor Mark White questioned the need for broadcasting into homes.
The Beirut death toll from militia clashes climbs with six killed and 13 wounded as fighting rages across the green line and in Druze hills. Leaders of rival militias meet in Lausanne for reconciliation talks after Lebanon’s turmoil deepens due to Syria’s moves and a stalled troop withdrawal accord with Israel.
In Atlanta, four Democratic hopefuls hit the campaign trail after a Sunday debate. Gary Hart faced attacks over inexperience as Mondale Glenn and Jackson praised the session. A Georgia poll showed Hart and Mondale tied at 31 percent with a plus minus five percent margin.
