Congress Stalemate On Labor Strike At Eastern Airlines
Congress failed to override President's veto on a bill to form a blue-ribbon commission to resolve the year-long Eastern Airlines labor dispute. The House vote 261-160 fell short of a two-thirds margin, reflecting party-line divisions as Eastern seeks wage concessions from Frank Lorenzo of Texas Air Corp. The Senate also rejected an oxygenated fuels amendment, tabling a proposal to ease winter ethanol use and lower oxygen standards as part of clean air legislation.
