Syracuse has reached 182.8 inches of snow this season, the second highest in its history and climbing toward the 192.1 inch record set in 1893. Meteorologist Brian Lovejoy of the National Weather Service says more snow through March and April could push the total past the record.
Syracuse reports 184.3 inches this season, far above normal and near the 1992 93 record. The cold pattern has produced a record monthly total in December and a late surge, with forecasts of a dry, warm summer ahead after March storms and a possible break of the snowfall record.
Thousands mourn at a Santee California memorial for Randy Gordon 17 and Bryar Zucker 14 killed in a Santana High School rampage four days after the attack. Gov. Gray Davis attended with his Santana graduate wife as families wore purple and gold ribbons.

In Onondaga County the Justice Center in downtown Syracuse foiled a jail escape attempt by one or two inmates. Deputies found saw marks in metal slats, a damaged window, toothpaste disguising the marks, and a hacksaw blade wrapped in tissue. Inmate Nicolas Caelo, held for armed jewelry-store robbery, is central to the incident alongside Paul Karis, a murder suspect with prior escape history.
Deputies found bedsheets tied into a rope in a janitor closet and saw marks in Cade and Kams cells. A saw blade and nailed hole in a window raise escape theories as detectives weigh charges of attempted escape and contraband while DNA and fingerprints may be tested.
Veterans officials seek a possible 10 million center in downtown Syracuse near the VA Medical Center at 800 Irving Ave. The nonprofit Veterans Outreach Center Inc. would develop and run housing and outpatient services for homeless veterans, with space rented by the Health Department and VA for adult day care for about 30 veterans daily.
