Clinton triumphs in South Carolina and Wyoming caucus

The Associated Press reports President Bush won the South Carolina primary over two Republican rivals. Bill Clinton captured a Democratic landslide in South Carolina and won Wyoming caucuses. Bush led against Patrick Buchanan while David Duke trailed. Clinton's Wyoming win is cited as support for his national credentials.

Syracuse Challenge Falls Short in College Aid Program

Since 1987 the Syracuse school district spent 1.2 million on a program to boost grades and test scores of college bound high school students. The Challenge promised guaranteed admission to Syracuse University and sufficient aid for four years for students scoring 85 in high school and 1000 on the SAT. By February 26, 85 students met the qualifications.

Experimental laser eyed treatment aims to save baby’s vision

Five month old Brett Coleman in Syracuse has cloudy scar tissue on his corneas that blinds his sight. Dr Sylvia Norton plans an experimental laser procedure pending FDA approval to clear the haze in her office at 475 Irving Avenue to prevent permanent vision loss in infancy. The doctor says results could come within two weeks, not years.

Navy prepared to board ship carrying Scuds

The United States warns it may intercept a North Korean freighter believed to carry Scud C missiles destined for Iran or Syria. President Bush and security officials express concern over missile proliferation in the Middle East while stressing no decisions have been made.

Taxpayers file early for quicker tax refunds in tough economy

Across New York about 2 million state income tax forms have been filed, 200 000 more than last year, as strapped taxpayers seek refunds to cover bills. Nationwide the IRS has 33.2 million forms, 1.7 million more than last year. Officials report no processing problems and urge early filing for faster refunds. In Central New York the average refund so far is about 1 083 dollars.

Early tax filings rise across Buffalo and Albany districts

The chart compares forms received so far this tax season and notes more people filed early than last year. The Buffalo district, serving 32 counties in Western and Central New York up to Jefferson County, and the Albany district, covering 27 counties from Orange County to the Canadian border, are highlighted.
