Colleges Move Toward Dry Campuses As Drinking Age Looms
Syracuse University will open the Schine Student Center in the fall with no alcohol served in the rath shelter and has tightened alcohol rules. Le Moyne College is studying bus transport for off campus events and plans to limit the on campus bar The Dolphin Den once the drinking age rises to 21. Fraternities are phasing out alcohol activities to fit a 21 year old standard and campus programs will emphasize food and recreation. Officials say this is a transition year, not a campus wide ban, as states may raise the drinking age to 21 to keep federal highway funds.
