In Sandy Oregon a mill cabin housing 14 workers burned at 1:15 a.m. killing LeRoy A. Ludwig, his wife Wanda, and their six children aged 15, 13, 10, 7, 2, and five months. Carl Wilson said his dog awakened him and firefighters found the structure leveled.

One team analyzes sewage dumping impacts while a second team weighs sports groups and recreation interests. Findings will be released in May and at a New York State Water Pollution Board hearing in 1950. Students include Howard G Minckler Robert E Casey Carlton F Hartman and Andrew J Lane.

William Draper, 30, found guilty of first degree murder in the beating death of 73 year old Mrs. Jennie O Keefe in Greece. After about four hours deliberation the eight man four woman jury recommended life imprisonment. Draper remanded to jail pending sentencing.
Negotiations resume today between the United Mine Workers and anthracite mine owners to reach a new contract. Pressure mounts as hard coal miners have worked a three day week for 13 weeks while soft coal miners with a new agreement have returned to a five day week.
Michael Shipkov, a former translator for the U S legation in Sofia, was sentenced to 15 years in prison after pleading guilty to spying for the United States. Four co-defendants received terms from four to 12 years as the two day trial concluded.
The Commerce Department announced tighter controls on shipping strategic goods to Red China and other non Western Hemisphere destinations. A new license requirement covers about 600 items destined outside the Western Hemisphere effective March 20, supplementing a prior order restricting 571 high security items to all destinations except Canada.
