He argues a state checkbook is needed and notes homeowner anger while defending the court action as redress for historic injustices. He remains hopeful for a wide settlement benefiting all sides.
Onondaga County workers at the Resource Recovery Agency earned up to 61 000 in incentive bonuses last year, with 10 workers receiving 14 000 or more in January. Bonuses continue this year as OCRRA faces possible taxpayer bailout to cover a 178 million trash memorandum and a proposed 44 per household fee.
A heavy storm drenched Central New York with up to 10 inches of snow and winds driving wind chills below zero. Snow fell at 2 inches an hour in places while Onondaga County saw 6 to 10 inches with the heaviest north of Syracuse. Traffic slowed, but no serious weather related injuries were reported as emergency crews worked. Snow continued along major routes from Albany to Buffalo and Syracuse Hancock Airport logged 7.2 inches with some flight disruptions.
A jury awarded Gary Hafner owner of Hatner's Red Barn in Clay one million dollars for injuries after an Onondaga County sheriff deputy pulled him from a forklift in 1994. The verdict is the largest in memory for such claims against the sheriff's department and may be appealed. Hafner says the win is vindication and a step toward replacing a damaged shoulder. County officials issued statements on the ruling.
A Madison County man and a Syracuse University student died in an early Saturday morning crash in Morris County New Jersey. Police said four others were hospitalized as they were returning from the Big East Tournament in New York City. The victims include Michael Howell 23 of Lincoln NY and Daniel Pau well 21 of North Carolina. The driver James C Boyer 20 of Syracuse spoke to troopers.
