USDA tightens organic standards bans GM ingredients and sludge
The Agriculture Department will publish strict organic rules prohibiting genetically modified ingredients and the use of sludge in organic products, with 100 percent organic and 95 percent organic product categories allowed to bear the seal. The move aims to aid small and medium farmers, boost exports, and requires a 90 day public comment period before final enactment.

Senate approves education savings bill amid debate
In a 61-37 Senate vote Democrats Moynihan and Schumer backed a bill to create tax free education savings accounts up to 2000 per child for private and public school costs. The proposal would raise the cap from 500 and allow couples earning up to 220000 to participate while opponents warn of harm to public schools. House members from Central New York supported the measure with Houghton McHugh Reynolds Walsh voting yes. The chamber also passed a 4220 measure letting people over 65 keep Social Security while continuing to work regardless of earnings.
