Mafia convictions mark major hit on pizza connection

Prosecutors hailed the 18 of 19 defendants in the pizza connection case as a landmark victory against the Mafia. After a 17 month trial interrupted by threats and a missing juror, jurors found 18 defendants guilty of operating a heroin smuggling network through American pizza parlors, including a former Sicilian boss and a Bonnano family leader. The verdicts further weakened the mob's grip on heroin trade and followed last year's convictions of four Mafia bosses in New York.
